Does Cannabis Affect My DNA?

The relationship between cannabis and genes is a progressively growing interest in science. Someone who knows how cannabinoids act with DNA has the potential to help cannabis users with choices about health and risk.

Some research shows that some cannabinoids may have a protective effect on DNA insults, while other studies show potential damage to DNA. The number of possible risk outcomes are based not only on how many cannabis compounds there are to examine, but also the variation related to individuals’ genetic make-up.

THC and DNA

The main psychoactive component of cannabis, THC, was examined for its potential effects on DNA integrity. Some in vitro studies have indicated that enough high THC doses could interfere with the repair processes of circular DNA and induce oxidative stress, while it should be noted that there are examples of studies growing cells with concentrations of THC that are well in excess of any concentrations that humans are exposed to, and qualified caution to these inferences.

CBD Benefits

The benefits of CBD seem to arise from different effects on DNA than THC. Some literature seems to indicate that CBD can offer some antioxidant effects that may protect DNA from damage. Some of the literature appears to also suggest that CBD may help protect some cell integrity and some related mechanisms of DNA repair, but would need to be replicated in humans if cannabis use is ever deemed protective.

Smoking versus other Edible or Drink

The rate at which cannabis is consumed can influence potential DNA consequences. As noted previously, smoking cannabis (inhalation) creates some products of combustion that are toxic to genomic material and we could compare this to tobacco smoke. It is more apt to consider smoking cannabis toxicity than cannabinoids or alkaloids when assessing the risk of smoking cannabis on genomic integrity.

Epigenetic Considerations

Along with some of the research looking at direct damage to DNA, there are also some researchers examining cannabis and DNA expression—that is, the epigenetic response of cannabis. In context, since some cannabinoids influence DNA expression without altering the genomic structure, they could still influence the expression and onset, and when, a gene turns on or off. This is an exciting area of research and is still in early stages, but could have significant implications in studying the longer-term influences of cannabis.

Dosage Considerations

Talking about the science around cannabis use and DNA might be somewhat dose-dependent. Occasional or moderate use is a different risk picture than numerous, heavy, chronic use. While concerning outcomes appear related to dangerously high doses at initiation or chronic heavy use, moderate usage patterns are less clearly defined to negative outcomes, but the same cannot be said for moderate use, it seems to leave the door slightly ajar to safety.

Reproductive Cells

Literature appears to suggest that cannabis use negatively affects DNA in reproductive cells, which negatively affects fertility for the individual and adversely affects the health of their offspring. Once again, these outcomes are preliminary only, but further studies are needed to further quantify these measures in the clinical population.

The available evidence suggests that the risks to DNA integrity from cannabis use are likely minimal with moderate use, are likely little, if any, but the real risk is possibly with smoking cannabis and/or heavy chronic use, which clearly merit an examination and risk scrutiny.
